Über Tromsø

Located at a Northern latitude of almost 70 °N, we find the beautiful city of Tromsø, the largest city in the Nordic countries north of the Arctic Circle, also known as “The Gateway to the Arctic” and “the Paris of the North”.

As a direct consequence of the abolition of the city of Bergen's centuries-old monopoly on the trade in cod, Tromsø got its city status in 1794. At that time the city counted a population of 80. Nowadays the city counts a multi-cultural population of well over 72000. Most inhabitants live on the main island, Tromsøya, where one can also find the popular city centre with its numerous restaurants and vibrant nightlife. The city centre even contains the highest number of old wooden houses in Northern Norway, the oldest house dating from 1789.

History, culture and nature come together in this modern and welcoming city. From the northernmost university and botanical garden to the Arctic Cathedral, from the Mackøl brewery to the Polar Museum and from the majestic Midnight Sun during the summer to the magical Northern Lights in the winter months. Throughout the year, the fjords and mountains just outside Tromsø offer great opportunities for many different sorts of outdoor activities, such as dogsledding, fishing, kayaking, skiing, hiking and whale watching.

The Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights), a definite must-see, but what are they and when can we see them? In a nutshell, they are shafts or curtains of coloured light, visible in the night sky between late September and late March. Several ingredients are crucial in order to see the best Northern Lights: the least possible amount of city lights, cold temperatures and last but not least, a clear sky.

The Northern Lights are actually the result of collisions between gaseous particles in the Earth's atmosphere with charged particles released from the sun’s atmosphere. How and when they appear, depends on sunspots and solar storms. Altitude and the type of collision also have an important effect on the auroral colour. The most common colour is pale green, yet occasionally the blue, violet and red lights appear.
